RIP

It’s been a while since I have written to you. I lost my beloved father on March 28. I have enclosed a photo of him and a tribute to him. If you had room, I thought the world should know that such a good man was lost.

He could remember seeing Indian’s traveling with horses and travois to pick berries. He lived when his 35 Ford coup could outrun the police. He sang like Johnny Cash, was as handsome as James Dean, drove like Steve McQueen, and rode better than Clint Eastwood. He lied about his age to get into the Navy and serve his country during war. He built each of his six children a house, with his weathered hands. He was married to the same woman for 57 years, and her last words were that he was a good man and he had always taken good care of her. At 78, I saw a young woman follow him out of a restaurant and tell him he was the most handsome MAN she ever saw. At 83 he danced until 2 a.m. with his granddaughters after the rodeo, and he was taking care of a son and a granddaughter until his last day. His last night, he went to his favorite watering hole to have a toddy and flirt with the waitresses who would visit his house where he would serve them sliced apples, toast and coffee. He got a final hug, and on the way home his worn, lovely heart quit on him. He is in no books.

He lived ten men’s lives in quiet obscurity…never asked anyone for anything, took care of his own, and he owed no man. He was a real MAN and I am proud that he was my father.

I found this poem he wrote in his things…

Whether seductive summer sweet hearts
or ‘sun’ times seasons sweaty task
or a lazy swimming afternoon
where on warm sand we would bask;
or Spring safari on forest trail
may the valiant pony and youth prevail.
We sleep beneath the spacious stars
with such magnificence, could there possibly be wars?
majestic winters snowy slopes with swift skis
and icy pond with sliding skate
Though age unfurls our fragile trip
The tranquil memory shall not abate.
